ABOUT COVID thy neighbour

This work was me trying to process the tension between social connection and disconnection I've felt during COVID.

As footpaths and train carriages and shopping centre escalators have steadily repopulated, we've been joined by a distinctly non-human presence which has altered the way we relate to each other. We're told the economic road of recovery winds past restaurants and crowded pubs, that we collectively need to get out and finger 99% cotton, 1% spandex, to tap and go and go and tap, but *for public health reasons* I can't tap you on the shoulder, or shake your hand, or protest!. I (like everyone) have been desperate for life to go back to normal, but the "normal" we've arrived at is alien to what we left: an existence hollowed out by the removal of intimacy and touch, by the newfound conception that anyone and everyone is a potential viral threat.

I wanted to visualise this tension by appropriating the language of public health communication. COVIDSafe branding feels like the government chucked an alien language into Google translate. To bring an unknowable force into the familiar, comforting lexicon of hexagonal highway speed signs is an attempt to re-establish a normality which is long extinct. It places the responsibility for collective survival on the shoulders of individual behaviour, in an era where the individual has been reduced to just another entry in a database. It demands faith in familiar power structures, as those (long-eroded) structures collapse before our eyes, and

I have never felt so alone.

Please stay tested, get home, and isolate.

Thank you.

ABOUT Oscar Davis

Oscar works with space debris, mouldy 7/11 coffee cups, the Lloyd Banks Coprolite, EASI Food Delivery brochures, disused bus timetables and broken soup ladles, to try and find who we are through what we leave behind.

He is NOT a hoarder.

He IS on the look out though for used, preferably stained, mattresses and can be contacted at oscar@pico.zone with any mattress related tip-offs.
